Susan Field
Susan is a Senior Associate and Solicitor Advocate in our international arbitration and pro bono practices.
Susan specialises in dispute resolution with a particular focus on international arbitration and pro bono advocacy. Her commercial practice comprises multi-jurisdictional work subject to a range of governing laws. She has been involved in advising, representing and appearing as an advocate for, clients in disputes from a range of sectors and jurisdictions in international arbitration proceedings (under the LCIA, SIAC and ICC Rules), expert determination and supporting litigation proceedings.
Susan is a key contributor to the firm's pro bono practice, representing asylum seekers before the Asylum Support Appeals Project; assisting asylum-seekers, refugees and migrants through applications to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) with the Rule 39 Initiative; advising clients on contract disputes in the English courts; managing and coordinating pro bono clinics; and contributing to strategy.
Susan was admitted as a Solicitor in England and Wales in March 2012 and has spent time on secondment to the dispute resolution teams at BP and Stemcor, in Herbert Smith Freehills' Dubai office and with the Danish Refugee Council.
Susan is also a trustee for the South West London Law Centres.
Background
Susan holds a first class LLB degree in Scots Law and Spanish Law from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and an LLM degree in Public International Law from the University of Helsinki, Finland.

- a Chinese state-owned oil and gas company and its UK subsidiary in a SIAC arbitration, valued in excess of USD 5.5 billion in relation to a joint investment in offshore oil and gas assets
- two multinational oil companies on potential arbitration proceedings against a West African State in relation to customs issues
- a global supplier of steel tubes for the energy industry in ICC arbitration proceedings relating to a contract governed by the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods and English Law
- BP on contentious issues in contract and in tort, and in multiple jurisdictions and fora, arising from the incident at the In Amenas gas facility in Algeria in January 2013.
