James Robson
James is a senior associate in our disputes practice in London.
James has experience advising on a broad range of disputes in the UK and Asia. He specialises in advising on complex disputes in the energy and technology sectors, including class actions. James has also helped clients defend substantial claims arising from M&A disputes.
Whilst James mainly works on English litigation, he also has a number of years of experience of international arbitration. James spent two years on secondment to the firm's Tokyo office, where he advised Japanese and international clients in arbitrations under various institutional rules (ICC and JCAA). He also has experience of gas and LNG price review disputes under long-term sale and purchase agreements.
James has also worked on expert determinations, mediations, and procurement disputes.
Background
James read law at Bristol University, before undertaking the Legal Practice Course (graduating with a distinction in 2009). He joined Herbert Smith Freehills in 2010.

- BP, Eni, JX Nippon and Repsol Sinopec in their successful defence of an £85m damages claim both in the Commercial Court in 2015 and in the Court of Appeal in 2016 under a gas sales agreement relating to the Andrew Field in the North Sea
- Vedanta Resources plc and its Zambian mining subsidiary Konkola Copper Mines plc in defending a Zambia-based class action claim
- an Asian private equity company in an ICC arbitration arising out of an M&A transaction in Asia
- various major energy companies in relation to gas price reviews under long term LNG gas sales agreements
- a Middle Eastern company in JCAA arbitration proceedings relating to non-renewal of a long term distribution agreement by a Japanese company
